Supported by the Global Scientific Training Program of Nanjing University, several teams have successfully accomplished their field practice and scientific training on Earth Sciences. Field investigations cover European Alps, Russian Baikal and southern Australian. More than 60 undergraduate students from Nanjing University as well as the partner universities participated these programs.

The China-France Alps Field Scientific Training project was organized by the School of Earth Science and Engineering, Nanjing University and carried out from July 14 to July 28. The School of Geography and Ocean Science, School of Atmospheric Science of Nanjing University and School of Earth Science of Zhejiang University joined the project. The overseas partner is Université d’Orléans in France, an internationally renowned institution of higher learning. Our university and Université d’ Orléans have a good relationship for nearly 40 years. The China-France Alps Field Scientific Training on Earth Science started in 2008, and this is the 6th field training project that both sides have conducted, with profound friendship and rich experience have been accumulated. Based on the Western Alpine orogenic belt, the excursion covers classic and cutting-edge scientific issues in the field of Earth Science, such as the evolution of the Tethys Ocean and European-African continental collision, tectonic deformation and metamorphism, mountain uplift and geomorphic evolution, mountain glaciers and climate change. The excursion was led by Profs. Michel Faure and Yan Chen on the French side, and by Profs. Wenbin Zhu, Bo Wang and Rong Yang on the Chinese side.

China-Russia Baikal field training project was conducted during July 17 to July 30, organized by the School of Geography and Ocean Science. Since 2006 when the first field excursion was organized by the School of Earth Science and Engineering and Russian Irkutsk State University, seven scientific training field trips were conducted. As one of student participants in 2006, Prof. Zhouchuan Huang was the co-leader of the Baikal field trip this year.

Another field training project on the Ecological Protection and Water Security is ongoing stating from Aug. 11 until Aug. 21. This field excursion is organized by the School of Earth Science and Engineering, Nanjing University and the University of Adelaide (Australia). Profs. Dong Wang and Yueqing Xie are co-leaders of this field trip. Students and professors from the Hoho University, China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), Ningxia University and Hebei University of Water Resources and Electric Power also join the project.
